According to ABC News, Rohan Dennis entered a guilty plea in Adelaide Magistrates Court on Tuesday to the aggravated charge of creating a likelihood of harm, and will be sentenced in District Court on this charge at a later date.
Dennis was charged earlier this year for allegedly driving the car that struck Melissa Hoskins. Hoskins, who was married to Dennis, was taken to the hospital after being hit, but died the next day.
The charges initially listed for Tuesday's hearing, which was postponed for six weeks to allow for further negotiations, were manslaughter by dangerous driving and manslaughter by negligent driving. Both of these charges were dropped.
According to ABC News, the court heard that “prosecutors accepted the plea to the new charges because Dennis was reckless and did not intend to kill his wife.”
The aggravated charge of creating a likelihood of harm to which Dennis entered a guilty plea on Tuesday carries a maximum sentence of seven years in prison, according to the latest version of the Criminal Code Consolidation Act of 1935. The previous charge, now dropped, had a maximum of 15 years in prison.
When the incident that led to Hoskins' death occurred, Dennis, then 32, had just returned to Adelaide with his two children.
Hoskins, who raced on track and road until her retirement in 2017, was followed by a wave of grief and shock in the cycling community after her death. She represented Australia in Team Pursuit at two Olympics and won the world title in the event in 2015.
