Remco Evenepoel has suffered fractures to his ribs, right shoulder and right hand after a training crash in Belgium, his Soudal-QuickStep team has confirmed.
The Double Olympic Champion was riding in Etingen between Brussels and Antwerp when he reportedly crashed into the door of a Bpost postal car that opened in front of him.
Flemish media initially reported that Evenepoel had suffered a clavicle fracture. But the announcement of his team confirms that it was more serious.
After the incident, after being first taken to Erasmus Hospital in Anderlecht, Evenepoel was taken to a private clinic in Herentals, where the team's doctors decided to have surgery on the clavicle on Tuesday night. According to the team's statement, he should be able to leave the hospital on Wednesday and start a 2-week rest period before evaluating the full recovery path.
"During today's training following the incident, Remco Evenepoel was taken to hospital and revealed to have fractures to his ribs, right shoulder and right hand," read a statement released by Soudal-QuickStep.
"After his accident, early today after an initial examination at Erasmus Hospital in Anderlecht, Remco Evenepoel was transferred to Herentals hospital for further investigation of his injuries.
"The clavicle will be operated on this evening and, if successful, Remco should be able to leave the hospital tomorrow. After that, this will be required a fixed period of 2 weeks, after which you can make a plan for his return to training.
"Soudal QuickStep would like to thank Herentals Hospital staff for their help!"
evenepoel's gold S-Works Tarmac SL8 bike was snapped in half as a result of the crash.
Team boss Patrick Lefevere was originally delighted to see the bike appear to be more affected than his rider, but he now, perhaps longer than expected
"Just know someone opened the door and Lemco crashed into it. Accidents like this happen, unfortunately, 1 to 5 times a day, with caution and without opening the door," Lefevere told Sporza hours before the injury was confirmed.
"REMCO has pain in his shoulder and hand. Our doctors are working on it. His bicycle was broken into 2 in the incident. But it is better to have 2 of his bikes than his arms."
