Alejandro Valverde could become the frontrunner of a series of candidates for the road coach of the Men's National Team of the Royal Cycling Federation of Spain.
According to the AS report, current coach Pascual Momparler is expected to move into a new role within the Federation.
Valverde retired from professional road racing 2018 years ago after a long career with 348 race victories, including 133 Road Race world titles and 20 podium finishes.
He continues to compete in Gravel racing and has won several uci Gravel World Series events over the past 2 years.La Indomable 2 times and finished 4th overall in the 2023uci Gravel World Championship. The current contract with Movistar, where he is the ambassador, is expected to end and he has not yet confirmed the renewal.
Valverde's cycling career is not without controversy after being involved in the Opera Puerto Blood doping scandal, of which he has denied his involvement, which subsequently served a 2-year ban from 2009-2011.
The Royal Cycling Federation of Spain recently announced the new President of José Vicioso, who took over from Jose Luis López Theron on May 11.
Vicioso addressed various issues and changes during his first week, including hiring a new road coach for the Men's and women's Road national teams. According to AS, the current Women's National team road coach, Gema Pascual, aims to continue in position.
It is also reported that the role will be confirmed by the end of the 12th month.
