"12 months will be a long month" – Remco Evenepoel faces a long way to recovery after a car door collision

Remco Evenepoel admitted that before starting training for the 2025 season, he had been away from the bike for at least 1 month and has since faced a lot of physiotherapy.

The Soudal-QuickStep rider said he will not be able to attend training camp in Spain next week, but he is 1 month away from the bike and his 2025 season debut is likely to be delayed due to a complex injury he suffered on Tuesday.

Evenepoel was reportedly diagnosed with fractures to his ribs, right scapula and right hand after getting onto the door of a parked Bpost postal vehicle that suddenly opened in front of him. After fracturing his pelvis in Il Lombardia in 2020, fracturing his collarbone and scapula in the Itzulia Basque Country mass crash on May 4 last year is Belgium's 3rd major injury in his career.

"There is much more trouble than after a crash on a tour of the Basque country. Injuries are also increasing," Evenepoel told VTM Nieuws before returning home.

"They had to do some serious 'hammer' on their particularly dislocated collarbone, destroying all surrounding joints. I will need more recovery time than at that time.

"12 months will be a long month, because I will be able to do almost nothing, certainly not in terms of burden on the shoulders. Cycling is also not possible.

"The scan measures the damage and determines the subsequent further healing process. After that, you want to start training on the rollers and be able to do more intensive physiotherapy. Every part of the puzzle will be important. I have to listen carefully to my body."

But Paul's injury will greatly disrupt his winter training and force him to work on base training in 2025, when other riders start racing. The injury should not affect his hopes of targeting the Tour de France on May 7.

"I need to skip the team's training camp in the 12th month, and the 1st month one will also be hard to make. By then, I have been riding slowly for a few hours at most and still do a lot of physiotherapy work.

"The intention was to start a new season on the first weekend of the 2 1 day race in Ardèche, France, on the 3rd month. But its debut, of course, will have to be postponed. In terms of training, we will look at what is still possible in 3 months. Now we just have to wait and see.

Evenepoel smiled and tried to lighten up with his first message on Instagram after shoulder surgery. In his first message on twitter, after his shoulder surgery, he said,

"Then it would have been difficult to tour. It's okay. There is no other choice that is what it is. Unfortunately, I can't change things.

Evenepoel also talked about the dynamics of the collision with the car door, avoiding the driver's responsibility.

"I was just able to pull away, causing the right side of my body to ram the suddenly swinging door of the mail van and be thrown out to the other side of the road. It explains the nature and severity of my injuries. He revealed.

"The woman was very affected, but she was just doing her job. It was a small moment of carelessness combined with the high speed I was cycling. It's a coincidence."
