The Cyclocross star, who was elected to team training camp instead of this weekend's World Cup, has been given a huge boost to the aspirations of the series.
Women's World cyclocross champion Fem Van Empel was one of the riders who opposed the trip to Cabras and instead took part in her Visma-Lease bike training camp.
Because team training camps played a role for these multidisciplinary riders, only 31 women and the same number of elite men were supposed to stand on the starting line in Sardinia.
Lucinda Brand (Baloise Trek Lions) had the opportunity to make a major impact in the Sardinian women's series, and Annemarie Worst (Cyclocross Reds) was her closest challenger.
Following the news that the World Cup round at Cabra had been cancelled due to weather conditions, the brand said on social media: "I was really looking forward to it, but it's too dangerous.
"It's a shame we can't take any more points in the fight for an overall win at the World Cup.
"I also sympathize with the organization. They've worked hard to make it possible, but that doesn't happen. There are only losers.
Meanwhile, Van Empel has already spent training camp at Calpe this season, switching focus to combine the goals of Lord and Cyclocross.
Visma-Lease A Bike Sports Director Jan Boven said the 22-year-old had an "excluded classification" this season.
"Everything we (the team) do with cyclocross ultimately has a function towards the road. Eventually it will also be with Fem," Boven told Wielerflits.
"She will focus more on this next year. Its direction to the women of the Tour de France is there, but we only give it substance after the cross.
"On the field we exclude classification, but she doesn't ride Sardinia in terms of the World Cup, so maybe she can compete there. She also wants to win the World Championship with some more crosses."
In the World Cup round in Sardinia and last weekend in Dublin, there were no alternative Superprelige or X2o events held in Belgium on the same weekend.
Ceylin del Carmen Alvarado (Fenix-Deceuninck) took part in the World Cup in Dublin last weekend and did not travel to Italy because he recovered from the illness.
With the cancellation at Cabras, the former World champion did not lag further in the World Cup standings.
Marion Norbert Liberol and Inge van der Heiden, riders of Cleland Corendon, and the British star Zou Backstedt were also among those missing in Italy.
In the men's field, European champion Baloise-Trek Lions were also due to be absent from Sardinia and instead attended the Lidl-Trek training camp.
Nys suffered a swollen ankle during a major crash at last weekend's World Cup in Dublin but returned to cross action next Sunday at Namur
His father Sven Nys told het Nieuwsblad: "Tibau continues to combine the road and the field.
"He also acts early on the road, so we maintain one cyclocross regime every weekend.
"His team will communicate later about his road program. It is a pity that the race in Dublin ended early, but the injuries are not so bad and Tibau can start in Spain at the team's training camp and that is a positive thing.
Meanwhile, Gerbenkuypers, who ranked 10th overall in the World Cup standings, also benefited from the cancellation of attending the Intermarché-Wanty team's training camp.
Ahead of this weekend's event, Chris Mannerz, head of Cyclocross at Flanders Classic, reacted to the decision of many riders who have not travelled to Italy.
"Some of the riders who would have been there otherwise would have been ill or injured, but that's it," he told Wielerflits.
"The training camp for these teams is this week and many riders and teams can't get around it.
Lawrence Sweake decided to travel to Italy instead of training with Cleland Corendon's teammates and regretted his late decision.
"It ultimately turned out to be the wrong decision," Sweeck shared with Het Nieuwsblad.
"But no one can do anything about this (weather conditions in Cabras). Just racing now is not responsible. We can hardly stand still here, what will it give to the bike.
"It could have been a course for me with quite a bit of sand.
Toon Arts (Deschacht・Hens-FSP) had also ruined the decision to travel to the World Cup round instead of taking a block of training.
He said to Sporza, "It's a shame personally for me, because I have a backlog to keep up with and I can't work on it right now.
"On the other hand, it is also important that today no one gets hurt and goes home.”
