Dwars door Vlaanderen organizers have chosen to remove the Kanarieberg climb and the fast approach to it from the 2025 race route out of safety concerns.
The paved climb is close to Ronce in Flanders, which has also been featured on tours of Flanders in the past. But it hit the headlines with this year's Dwarfs Door Vlaanderen thanks to a mass crash on the approach to the hill.
The crash at the Peloton saw Wout van Aert, Jasper Stuyven, Biniam Girmay, and Mads Pedersen among the riders who slammed the deck on a fast and sweeping stretch of the n48 road in their approach to Canary Berg. As a result, Van Aalt and Steven were forced to miss the rest of the Spring classic and both suffered several injuries, including a broken collarbone.
In a route presentation for 2025 on Thursday, Dwars door Vlaanderen organizers revealed that roads and hills averaging more than 8km will not be taken up in next year's race, which will be held on 4/2.
"After last year's heavy crash, we did our assessment with the Flanders Classic," Race Chairman Pavel Desmet told Het Nieuwsblad.
"Cycling is changing and the 'ready race' no longer exists. In every race today, riders race with a knife between their teeth. Therefore, we decided to change the course to further improve safety.
Canary Berg, its approach, and Corteker were also removed from the 2024 tour of Flanders on the 3rd month before the mass high-speed collision at the Dwarves.
Van Aert recently revisited the climb as part of a 97km reconnaissance ride with his Visma–Lease A Bike teammates, along with several other famous Flandrian hills, including Wolvenberg, Oude Kwaremont, and Paterberg.
He was accompanied by Olav Kooij, Christophe Laporte, Dylan van Baarle, and a few others. Several young members of the Dutch team, including Neopro, participated.
Van Aalto is not the only change made by the organizers in the 2025 race, but is delighted to see it remind of a ruined spring from the route Rai
The cobblestone of Valent will be removed as well as the climbs of Cortecare and Rhodoos. Kortekeer will be replaced by the further rise of Berg Ten Houte, and Ladeuze will be replaced by Eikenberg.
