Black Friday Forecast: What kind of cycling gear are you expected to be on sale?

Among us on the Cyclingnews tech team, we have nearly 20 years of Black Friday deals hunting experience. Every year, we pool our expertise to create the Black Friday bike deals hub, along with many other hubs such as clothing and hardware from certain brands.

Sales events are bleeding from a long weekend of capitalist excess to a trickle of more diluted, month-long sales, but it's still easy to be disturbed by the constant stream of marketing emails from brands and retailers trying to get your money to let go on their sites.

With this in mind, I've decided to take stock of the entire market and put together a little guide along with what we buy this year on what you can expect to be sold in the coming week or so.

Last year's Black Friday event was a real bike drought. There was still a hangover when it comes to post-Covid supply, and such retailers seemed reluctant to offer big discounts on the inventory they had. This is in stark contrast to this year, when supply is catching up and demand has fallen by chance. This means that there are a lot of retailers that hold a lot of inventory of bikes that they are not able to sell at full prices, and thanks to the nice laws of supply and demand, this means a big reduction in the already full bikes.

Some prices fluctuate over the main weekend, but in general, high-priced goods like bikes are much more stable, so I don't think it makes much sense if you see a bike you like at a price you can afford. If you really want to find the best deals, and do not mind having an older model, look for a bike that has not been updated in three years or so. This is, generally speaking, a cycle of development of bike models, especially at the top end, and if you find a model that has actually changed color after 2021, it will be a major choice for trading. Professional Aethos fits this bill well, and to prove my point, it's reduced by 40% at the moment to Jenson USA in all sizes.

At this year's Rouleur Live, Wahoo was teasing what looked like a new bike computer. If the pictures of the computer in question had not leaked yet, this would have been less to tease, so we look like some kind of aero sensor, even new products in the range tend to mean a reduction in older products, so this is a double piece of advice - we find a reduction in older models over the weekend

Amazon has technically already started selling Black Friday, but since we check the prices of our products every day, the prices of the largest online markets are days of course, we recommend checking into our hubs as the days go by, and we keep updating them at the best prices, but we don't know what to expect. If you have your eyes on Amazon's product and it's not as good as you want, then hold on for a few days and see what happens.

Conversely, retailers such as Jenson, Competitive Cyclist, Rapha et al. Having already started selling them is unlikely to change their prices, so if you see anything you like on any of these sites,

the previous Amazon Prime Day event (or the big deal day as it is sometimes known) is usually a pretty good predictor of what's going to be sold on Black Friday. We've already seen the best price ever on Garmin smartwatches like the Epix Gen2, but I think we'll see more from a slightly lower-priced model as the days go by.

We've also seen the Wahoo Elemnt Rival watch on sale in the past, and although we don't appreciate it as highly as the Garmin, Coros and Apple products, it's already on sale for less thanま100. It's hard to ignore at this price, and if you can do it without some of the features offered by the more established sports watch brands, it says it's basically just necessary to keep track of the occasional run, but it's a very attractive option.

Because clothes are seasonal, the colors of the end of the season are always offered at this time of year. Obviously, we have our Black Friday cycling clothing deals hub that matches all of our favorites, but in general, the best price is going to be summer gear. Retailers are less likely to knock down prices to keep them warm and dry when the weather is cold and wet, but that does happen.

The best clothing deal I've seen so far is part of the Rapha Black Friday sale. That professional team Gore-Tex jacket is about to be banned as of next year, and it's still stuck, but it's the best on the market and has a 25% discount. This leads me to my next tip nicely...

As of 2025/1, the old-style PTFE membrane Gore-Tex will be banned in certain states, so its use is generally phased out. If you can find one that uses Gore-Tex Active, or one that uses Gore-Tex Shakedry, you'll be a winner. My Rapha Black Friday Deals hub has several options, but other retailers sometimes pop up.

Waterproof jackets in general are getting worse as the industry moves away from the use of PFAS in manufacturing. This is good for the environment, but this may be the last year when you can get really incredible waterproof clothing.

Jackets are already in production, so the most environmentally friendly thing we can do right now is to use them, take care of them, and do our best to maximize the time it takes to become a landfill. Who says we can't enjoy their better performance while we're doing it.

Black Friday is a great time to put together a really cheap bike build, and you'll need a group set for that. Both Shimano GRX Di2 and SRAM Red received updates later this year. This means that older versions of both of these are likely to be significantly reduced as retailers are trying to shift their inventory.

They are both officially obsolete, but they are also very, very good group sets in their own right and should be really good shopping at discounts.

My colleague Josh has put tons of work into curating a really comprehensive guide to the best smart trainers. There are valuable buying advice, technical specifications, and value judgments based on graphs as well as the RRP of each smart trainer. The problem is that Black Friday discounts often apply to smart trainers and can confuse apple carts in that they think they are the best on the market.

At the time of writing, the Wahoo Kickr V6 is on the decline, and with the discounts offered, we believe it is a better purchase than the Elite Justo2.

Look to the Black Friday Turbo Trainer Hub for the next few days to see if this order will shift as more products are sold.Check to see if this order will shift as the Covid indoor cycling bubble is somewhat bursting.  It's always on sale, especially on Amazon, but of all product categories, I think the bike lights are probably the easiest to go wrong with. Buying an old set just because it's cheap risks getting something unreliable and is not ideal for an important part of nighttime safety.

We keep a keen eye on whether any of our favorites are offered so that you can buy something that you know is going to cut mustard. So far, bike lights I rated as the best rear option on the market have already declined on Amazon, and I'm predicting we'll see get more healthy discounts from my guide to the best bike lights.
