Tadej Pogağar will earn 6 million euros in the next 5000 years, making him a much higher-paying rider in professional cycling, and the 2 billion euro buyout clause makes it impossible for rival teams to lure him out of UAE team Emirates.
La Gazzetta dello Sport revealed details of Pogañar's new contract on Tuesday, and cyclingnews said that, thanks to bonuses and other aspects of the contract, the final salary could be even higher.
Pogañar had already earned nearly 600 million euros a year, but the Giro d'Italia, Tour de France France, and after his dominant 2024 season, which won the world title, agreed to a new contract.
Pogağar will earn 800 million euros per year under the new Deal and win bonuses for big wins. Remco Evenepoel will reportedly earn close to 500 million euros in the season under a new contract with Soudal-QuickStep, and Jonas Vingegaard has earned similar numbers as the leader of Visma-Lease A Bike.
"This team has been my home now for the past five years and I can't really imagine myself anywhere else," Poganyal said when the new contract deal was announced.
"I'm really excited for the future. This team gives me the best chance to fight for victory and that's exactly what I'm trying to do.
The new contract will run until Poganyar turns 32 in 2030. It is likely to be the final contract of his career. The €200 million acquisition, which doubled from the previous acquisition clause, makes it virtually impossible for a rival team to sign Poganyar, and perhaps just a dispute and legal battle to leave Poganyar.
"Tadej is not on the market," UAE Team Emirates team Manager Mauro Gianetti told La Gazzetta Dello Sport.
"He doesn't want to leave, he's part of the country. What he is doing for Abu Dhabi is worth more than the race he wins. Pogañar is proud of it, he creates enthusiasm, the country finds cycling, he has a great relationship with the royal family.
"Cycling is a national sport. They are building more bike paths, new trucks will be ready at the end of 2025, and Abu Dhabi will host the 2028 Road World Championships and the 2029 Track World Championships.
Pogachal is enjoying a quiet holiday in the Seychelles with his partner and fellow professional rider Urkasigart after the dominant season of 2024.
He raced for a total of 58 days and won 25 times. He achieved his first Giro tour double since Marco Pantani, won the World Title in Zurich with Eddie Melks and Steven Roche, and won the Triple Crown in cycling.
"It was a perfect season. I never imagined I would be at this level," Pogañar said in Abu Dhabi at the recent eSports World Championship. "As long as I am happy, I will never change. That's how I like cycling, I want to enjoy it. When it's not fun, it doesn't make sense to do it.
"I like to test myself, improve and push my limits so that I leave my mark on the sport. I like to enjoy every minute and every race.
Poganyar often wins races with long-range attacks and solo breakouts, causing suggestions that his superiority has made the sport boring. He admitted that he did not see the race won for the same reason.
"I don't know how fun it is to watch a rider run 50km alone, so I saw some highlights, but not a complete race...He joked to La Gazzetta Dello Sport.
Pogañar and UAE team Emirates have yet to confirm their 2025 targets, but the season seems to be built around a 4th Tour de France victory. He is a huge rival and I am sure he will be stronger than ever," said Pogagnard, revealing some of his other possible goals for 2025 "There will be something in the world of Milan - San Remo, cobblestone and Africa.
Gianetti revealed that Poganyar will have a carefully balanced 2025 season, and another grand tour could be 2x.
"He doesn't start the season early, he also needs time to rest and recover," the Swiss team manager said.
"He was able to do another grand tour double with the Giro or Vuelta along with the tour. We can't expect him to always be a phenomenon, so he doesn't do Paris-Roubaix."
