Steve Cummings has revealed that he has decided to “leave” the Ineos Grenadiers after months of speculation about his role on the team.
According to Cycling News, head coach Xavier Artecse will also be leaving the team at the end of the season.
Ineos Grenadiers declined to comment when contacted by Cycling News, as the team is scheduled for 2025 at a reception in Manchester.
Cummings was Ineos Grenadiers' racing director, but has somehow been replaced by Kurt Asl-Arvesen, who was recently announced as lead sport director. Cummings had been the lead sportif of the Tour de France for several years, but was ousted from that position just days before this year's race.
Cummings' relationship with Tom Pidcock had become difficult. The team claimed Cummings had a remote role during the Tour, but since then he has not worked as a directeur sportif in any other major race.
Pidcock was expected to leave Ineos Grenadiers after being “passed over” by management for Il Lombardia, but a transfer deal was not agreed upon and Pidcock is now back with the team and is in Manchester for a winter get-together.
Cummings never spoke about his problems and difficulties with the Ineos Grenadiers and posted a message on his LinkedIn page to clarify the situation and successfully left the team.
“I know there has been some speculation, so I wanted to clarify my situation, and I have come to the decision to leave INEOS,” Cummings wrote.
“This may seem like a big move, but I am now ready to begin a new phase in my career. It has been an honor to work with such a talented group of riders and staff over the past four years. I want to take this opportunity to sincerely thank them for their support and dedication.”
Rival teams are looking to sign Cummings for 2025, but he did not reveal his future destination.
“I have always enjoyed and thrived on working in a high-performance environment. My focus is now on new challenges in professional cycling,” Cummings said.
With Luke Rowe, Ethan Hayter, and Honatan Narvaez leaving Ineos Grenadiers, the British team is trying to fight the gradual decline in results and relevance as a big budget super team. Axel Laurance, Lucas Hamilton, Bob Jungels, Samuel Watson, Victor Langelotti, and Peter Oxenberg are under contract through 2025.
Performance Director Scott Drewer led the reform of Ineos. He has set the trend to focus on stage races, classics, and future talent. Other new staff members include Leonardo Basso (Directeur sportif), Lead Performance Coach Tom Helleman, and Mehdi Kordi (Head of Performance Support and Innovation (Head of Performance Support and Innovation). Dr. Billy Fitton from British Cycling will join as Head of Engineering and Technology, replacing Dan Bigam.
“We will set team performance plans and goals, conduct several key training camps, and prepare the entire team for the hard races in January.
.” We want to set the right direction from the start and will work closely with the athletes to promote success and establish a culture that will serve as the foundation for our future.
