Mark Cavendish (Astana Kazakstan) officially announced Sunday that he will end his career as a professional cyclist after the Tour de France Prudential Singapore Criterium. That this would be Cavendish's last race was all but announced in a media release a month ago and in social media posts a day earlier. Still, the athlete's comments after the 2025 Tour de France route was announced raised questions about whether the Manxman was considering continuing his career as a professional cyclist.
In the days and weeks that followed, he showed no inclination to discuss his future, and uncertainty continued to swirl.
A week ago, speaking to Cycling News and Cycling Weekly in Saitama, Japan, Cavendish said, “I haven't talked about the future. Cavendish, who has won 35 stages in the Tour de France, has repeated this answer many times since, most recently at a pre-race media conference in Singapore on Saturday afternoon.
However, on Saturday evening Singapore time, Cavendish admitted in an Instagram post that he would be closing his career this weekend.
“Sunday will be the last race of my professional cycling career. [I've been lucky enough to have done what I love for almost 20 years and I can say I've accomplished everything I could on a bike. Cycling has given me so much and I love the sport. And now I am ready to see what the next chapter holds.” Cavendish was joined by Jasper Philipsen (Alpecin Deceuninck), Biniam Girmay (Intermarke Wanty), Primos Roglic (Red Bull Bora-Hansgrohe), Arnaud De Lier (Lot Dostony), Chris Froome (Israel (Premier Tech) and others will take on the criterium in downtown Singapore. He will, of course, end his career with his hands raised in triumph once more.
