Chantal van den Broeck-Braak has decided to extend her career and contract with SD Worx-Protime by one year, looking to make her 11th season with the team her last in the pro peloton.
Ryder originally planned to retire in 2022, but signed a contract through the end of 2024. This was because it became increasingly clear that she was not finished with professional cycling yet, and she was reassured that her plans to have a family were not a reason to hesitate.
The Dutch rider took a break from racing in 2023 to have her first child and returned to the peloton in 2024. Van den Broeck-Braak may not have had the smoothest of runs, but it was not a season without success, winning the red, white, and blue Dutch champion jersey.
“Last year she had a lot of injuries and illnesses. 'We hope that in 2025 there will be fewer setbacks so that she can once again showcase the full championship jersey. For that reason, we had no hesitation in offering her another one-year contract."
[8During her years with SD Walks Pro Time, Van den Broek Black has competed in the World Championship Road Race, Amstel Gold Race, Strade Bianche, Tour of Flanders, Gent-Wevelgem, Omloop Het Nieuwsblad, Balls. Ladies Tour (twice), among other victories.
“It wasn't the season I had hoped for, but it was a realistic year,” van den Broek-Blaak said. 'Becoming a mother during a top-level sporting career means you actually have to take two years off, and going into the NK [Dutch Championships] I felt I could train and recover again like I used to.'
“That national title was confirmation that my feelings were right. As a mother, becoming Dutch Champion is an absolute highlight in my career. To end my last year in the red, white and blue, there is no more beautiful way to end my career”
.
The team points to the rider, who has had many top results throughout her cycling career, as one of the most important culture bearers on the team, and the 34-year-old says she hopes to be able to pass on her experience and knowledge. That doesn't mean she doesn't pursue more results herself.
“The drive to perform is there,” van den Broek-Blaak says. 'But that winner's mentality is important for us athletes. But that winner's mentality is part of me.”
“I'm going to train hard and give it my all so I can give it everything again. I want to be in the finals. If I can't win anymore, then I will be at peace with passing the baton.”
