Val Garda Women's World Tour One-Day Race Cancelled

Organizers of the Postnord Vårgårda West Sweden announced Thursday that they have canceled two one-day events scheduled for early August, a team time trial and a road race, due to travel restrictions caused by the COVID-19 coronavirus. Volgorda CK President Helen Henrickson said she hopes the two races will return to the Women's World Tour calendar in 2021.

"It is, of course, very sad, but after discussions with both the municipality and sponsors, we have decided that under the circumstances there is no opportunity to gather the necessary organization for a bike party that would include the competition and the entire weekend," Henrickson said.

"However, there was no other way to stop it, as we now seem to be limited in our ability to travel. It's sad, but I think it was the right decision. Now we look forward and hope to be back on the world tour in August 2021."

The UCI suspended all racing until July 1 due to public health restrictions caused by the COVID-19 coronavirus pandemic. The sport's governing body announced that it will revise its late-season Women's World Tour, scheduled to run from August 1 through November 8.

The calendar will include 18 Women's World Tour events and five stage races, including the shortened Giro Rosa (September 11-19). La Course (August 29), three Ardennes Classics (La Flèche Wallonne (September 30), Liège-Bastogne-Liège (October 4), and Amstel Gold Race (October 10)), the Tour of Flanders (October 18), the new Paris-Roubaix ( October 25), and 13 other one-day races will also be held.

The PostNord Vårgårda WestSweden road race and team time trial remained on their original dates of August 8 and 9, which would have put them on the second weekend of the Women's World Tour, after the Strade Bianche in Italy on August 1. It was.

The cancellation of the two one-day events means that the Women's World Tour will be reduced to 16 events. However, the UCI emphasizes that the revised calendar to be announced is highly dependent on the progress of the COVID-19 pandemic and the health precautions and guidelines stipulated in each country.

In the 2019 edition of PostNord Vårgårda WestSweden, Trek-Segafredo won the team time trial ahead of Canyon SRAM and Team Sunweb, and Marta Bastianelli won the road race ahead of Marianne Vos and won the road race ahead of Lorena Vives.
