Richie Porte, with Bauke Mollema, focused on Tour de France GC

Trek-Segafredo reiterated that Richie Porte and Bauke Mollema will focus on this season's Tour de France (August 29-September 20). Porte, who is based in Monaco, says he is now able to train outside again and that "the fire is burning" for the Tour.

As previously reported, Vincenzo Nibali, who will sign with Trek-Segafredo in 2020, is targeting his third career Giro d'Italia win, while Porte and Mollema will co-lead the Tour in 2019, finishing 11th and 28th, respectively.

"When the revised calendar was announced, it definitely made it easier to get back on the trainer during the closure period," Porte said on the team website.

"Of course I'm on fire for the Tour de France, but to not be able to ride on the road for nine weeks would be a shock. Cycling is a goal-oriented sport, so it's really nice to have a calendar.

"The Tour de France will remain my main goal for the season, with the bonus of riding in my home town of Nice. But the Tour in September is definitely uncharted territory. It won't be as hot as usual, and the weather in the mountains might be a bit more fickle.

Porte is one of the few pro riders to have already tasted victory during the shortened 2020 season, winning a stage and the overall at the Tour Down Under in Adelaide, Australia in January. He then competed in the Cadel Evans Great Ocean Road Race, before returning to Europe for the Tour des Alpes Maritimes et du Var (Porte finished third overall) and Paris-Nice, a 17-day race.

"Personally, it was a great start to the season," Porte said.

"The fact that we have a race at the end of the year is good for the sport. Teams are transparent with us about what is happening behind the scenes at this time of year. It's nice to be able to get some miles in on the road and restart the season."

According to the team, Porte and Mollema both hope to resume their season at the Tour de Ain, a French stage race on August 7-9.

Morema is looking forward to sharing the leadership with Porte again at the Tour, and the Dutchman will then look for a stage win at the Vuelta a EspaƱa from October 21 to November 9.

"My goals for the rest of the season are more or less the same," Mollema said. "I'm really looking forward to racing again after this break. Up until now it's been about staying in shape, but with the new calendar I can really start working towards my goals."

"I'm really looking forward to getting back into the swing of things.

"It's going to be a busy few months, but I really hope to be able to give my fans a lot of support again.
