Richard Karapas once again dismissed the notion that he was disloyal to Movistar after moving to Ineos ahead of the 2020 season, saying he owes the team nothing.
The 2019 Giro d'Italia winner was the subject of a Netflix documentary on Movistar's 2019 season, El dia menos pensado (The Most Unexpected Day), in which Movistar director sportif Pablo Lastras criticized him for having "no loyalty."
Karapas shared the Movistar leadership with Mikel Landa in the 2019 Giro, finishing first and fourth overall, respectively.
In a YouTube interview with Extreme Athlete Valenti Sanjuan (opens in new tab), Calapaz suggested that the hierarchy was not always clear while running for the eventual win in Verona. Carapaz, from Ecuador, won the maglia rosa with his stage 14 victory in Courmayeur and held the lead until the final week.
"It's very difficult to live with that," Calapaz said. 'You never know when the knife is going to fall. There were situations during the race where we were both there and we didn't know who was riding for who.
"There is no doubt what would have happened at Movistar if I had stayed on as leader. Now was the time and I have no regrets. I won a Grand Tour in Movistar. Even if they called me everything, I owe them nothing. I don't regret quitting and I'm not sad about it."
Carapas recently admitted that he will return to the Giro d'Italia in 2020, assuming the Giro d'Italia is held on October 3-25. While Egan Bernal, Chris Froome, and Geraint Thomas will compete in the Tour de France, Calapaz will compete in the Corsa Rosa as leader of Team Ineos.
"Ineos told me, 'Richard, we are going to match you. In Movistar, I didn't have the opportunity to adapt the group to me," Karapas said.
"Ineos is like NASA. There are so many surprises here that I've never experienced before."
