Lizzie Deignan (Trek-Segafredo) will focus on the Giro Rosa and Tour de Flanders as part of her end-of-season race program. The former world champion says she dreams of winning team races again once public health restrictions due to the COVID-19 coronavirus are lifted and racing resumes.
"I am especially excited about the "Spring Classic" race! I don't think it matters what time of the year the race is held. The Spring Classic is an iconic race and dreaming of winning it for the team is my motivation for training now," Dignan said in a team press statement.
The UCI announced earlier this month the women's World Tour calendar (18 events) from August 1 to November 8. The schedule includes five stage races and 13 major one-day events.
The Giro Rosa, usually held in July, will be held September 11-19. The stage races will be shortened from 10 to 9 days, ending just one day before the start of the elite women's road race for the 2020 UCI Road World Championships in Aigle Martigny, Switzerland, on September 26.
However, with this year's World Championships set on a mountainous course, Digne is looking further ahead to the 2021 World Championships, which will be held in the Flanders region.
Dignan will target the Tour de Flanders this fall, which will be held on October 18. She won this race in 2016 after a two-man sprint between herself and Emma Johansson.
"Flanders holds a special place in my heart and will be another chance to experience the climbs and cobbles before the 2021 World Championships," she said.
She could compete in the Tour de Flanders twice, this fall and next spring, before next year's World Championships.
Deignan initially considered retiring after the 2020 season, but said she is eager to continue racing for the delayed Tokyo Olympics in August and the world championships in Flanders in October 2021.
