The organizers of the Postnord Tour of Denmark have announced the cancellation of the 2020 event. The race had been given dates of September 1-5 in the revised UCI road calendar.
Martin Elberg-Petersen, director of the Danish Cycling Union (DCU), told Ekstra Bladet that the difficulty of holding the race in conjunction with the Tour de France was one of the factors that led to the cancellation.
"The position [on the calendar] means that there is different attention to the race. And some of the best Danish and international riders may not be able to attend to race in France."
DCU requested that the race be held in September, not knowing that the Tour de France would be held at the same time. The Tour starts in Nice on August 29 and runs through September 20.
"We requested the race dates in early September, over a month ago, and at that point we did not know if the Tour de France would move or not take place at all.
"And the weather in Denmark was too bad to apply for dates later that year.
The coronavirus outbreak put all large gatherings in many parts of the world on hold until the end of August. Elveri Petersen stated that health considerations would make it difficult to hold the race.
"We think it is more than difficult to try to hold such a big bike race on the other side of September 1."
"It's not like a soccer super league, where you can't separate the spectators or test all the participants for coronavirus. It is also uncertain whether the borders will be opened. If the borders are not opened, we will not be able to attract foreign athletes and the race will lose a lot of value."
