Due to the COVID-19 coronavirus pandemic, the UCI's revised 2020 calendar is still open to many changes due to the possibility of races in different countries and questions regarding the organization of more complex events.
According to the latest reports, Milan-San Remo could be changed from August 8 to August 22, swapping with the national championship weekend.
Uncertainties still remain regarding the venue for the World Championships in September. The Swiss government, the proposed host, may make a decision on Wednesday regarding public events, but the French newspaper L'Equipe insists that the World Championships will be held in Aigle Martigny, near the UCI headquarters.
However, if Switzerland finds it impossible to hold a major sporting event in late September, the Giro d'Italia could use a week of its calendar to move the Corsa Rosa forward, overlapping with the Vuelta a España and clashing with the final weekend of Paris-Roubaix to avoidance.
Two weeks ago, the Italian Cycling Federation had already proposed an August date for Milan-San Remo and Il Lombardia.
According to Tuesday's Het Nieuwsblad, many professional teams support the possibility of changing the date of Milan-San Remo from the current August 8 to August 22 (one week before the Tour de France (August 29-September 20).
This would mean a one-hour drive from San Remo to the Grand Depart in Nice, which would reduce the travel time and distance for the riders in their current and likely continuing health.
Similarly, Il Lombardia would take the August 8 slot for Milan-San Remo, so it would be held exactly one week after Strade Bianche (August 1), and the finishing point of Strade Bianche, Siena, Tuscany, and Il Lombardia's Bergamo, the starting point, is less than four hours away by land, which means that both races will attract similar types of athletes.
However, the possibility that the UEC Road European Championships (originally scheduled for September in Trentino, Italy, but now postponed until 2021 at the same venue) could be held the week before the Tour de France in Plouay, Brittany, France in 2020 The news that this is the case has put a new spanner in the works.
When the UCI announced the calendar for all races on May 19, it said that any changes to the World Tour calendar would be confirmed after the meetings of the Professional Cycling Council and the UCI Management Committee on June 9 and 10, respectively.
The game of musical chairs will become clearer if the Swiss government decides to allow for an increase in spectator numbers and to hold the 2020 UCI Road World Championships in Aigle Martigny from September 20 to 27.
After the Vuelta a España, a world championship in the Middle East, possibly in November, is also being considered, but this has many other problems, not the least of which is that the team was quarantined during the UAE Tour in February after a COVID-19 outbreak.
John Lelangue, team manager of Lotto Soudal, told Het Laatste Nieuws on Tuesday that he hopes Switzerland will be able to host the World Championships, but is concerned about whether players from outside Europe will be allowed to leave their home countries to participate He said that he is concerned about the following.
"What about South America, North America, and Central America, for example? Can you travel here from those countries? We wouldn't be able to organize a world championship just for European athletes," Lelangou asked.
