British Cycling, in conjunction with Scottish Cycling and Welsh Cycling, announced Wednesday that all international and national competitions, including national championships, will be suspended until September 1. The federation announced Wednesday that it will suspend all international and national competitions, including national championships, until Sept. 1.
The national sports governing bodies also proposed that international, national, regional, and non-competitive competitions, as well as club and association activities, would be moved to rolling suspension.
"The suspension will be reviewed every two weeks and any extension or reduction of the suspension will be publicly announced six weeks in advance," said a press statement from British Cycling.
"This means that the original dates for many national series and championships across multiple disciplines are no longer feasible, but we will endeavor to reschedule these events for later in the calendar year where possible."
"Some disciplines, for example race formats in outdoor individual events, may be able to return sooner than others if appropriate measures are taken to manage risk in line with government guidance and the guidance we will implement.
"In all cases, we will carefully consider the options available to manage the safety of participants, volunteers and the general public, including reasonable measures that can be introduced to manage the safety of the sport.
Although the sporting world has been brought to a halt by the COVID-19 pandemic, several countries have begun to relax public health restrictions. The British Cycling Federation initially suspended competition until April 30, but extended it until June 30. However, due to the COVID-19 epidemic, public health restrictions are being eased in some countries.
Major events on the UCI International Road Calendar, including the Prudential Ride London men's and women's races, the Tour of Britain, and the Women's Tour, have been cancelled, and the Tour of Yorkshire men's and women's races have already been postponed . The national championship weekend had been tentatively set by the UCI for August 23, but this date will now be changed.
Non-competitive events such as regional races and sportifs will be suspended until August 1, a month earlier than international and national championships, due to shorter travel distances, fewer event officials, and expected smaller crowds.
"We will adopt a risk management approach. This means that some disciplines and events can return before others if the format ensures that the safety of all is properly managed," the press statement said.
For club and organization activities, British Cycling will extend the suspension period until July 4. Following government guidelines, events will begin resuming in a shorter period of time with more flexibility, guidance and risk management.
