Elinor Backstedt: still sore and uncomfortable.

Elinor Backstedt is back home recovering from a mountain bike crash that fractured her tibia on Sunday. The British rider spent the night in the hospital and returned to her home in South Wales, although she may need to undergo surgery to treat the fracture.

"I'm still in pain and discomfort at the moment but very happy to be home with my family and boyfriend. I will keep you posted on any developments. Thank you all for the many messages of sympathy. I'm so sorry for your loss," Backstedt said in the team's press release.

Trek-Segafredo confirmed on Sunday that Backstedt, the youngest rider on the women's world team, suffered a broken tibia in a training crash and was taken to the hospital for treatment. The team later confirmed that their doctor had spoken with a doctor at the hospital and that no decision had yet been made as to whether Backstedt would need surgery.

The team confirmed on Wednesday that Backstedt will see a specialist later in the week to evaluate whether the bone alignment is correct and to determine if surgery is necessary.

Backstedt's father, Magnus Backstedt, said he was with her when she fell. According to the team's press release, they were mountain biking in a local forest near the family home in South Wales when she had her accident.

She was descending a steep off-road section at about 10 km/h when her front wheel lost traction and slipped and fell.

"I was enjoying a MTB ride in the local forest and was on my way home. 'As she approached a relatively steep off-road descent, her front wheel slipped and was swept away.'

"She was going about 10 km/h at the time and I was right behind her. She was going about 10 km/h and I was right behind her. It was so slow that it looked like one of those little falls where you stand up and smile.

Backstedt was transported to the nearby Royal Glamorgan Hospital, where an X-ray showed a spiral fracture of the tibia. She was admitted overnight for observation and discharged on the afternoon of May 25.
