Williams Brothers Host Virtual Army Cycling Classic on Zwift

The Armed Forces Cycling Classic, one of the cornerstone races of the American criterium scene, has been canceled this year amid a coronavirus outbreak, but organizers have announced several events and challenges that will continue to attract riders and fans this weekend.

Organizer Arlington Sports, in partnership with Rapha, and led by American elite criterium champion Justin Williams and his brother Corey, both of Los Angeles' L39UNION (Legion) team, Zwift's free No Drop Ride has been announced. The ride will start at 11:00 EDT on Saturday, May 30.

AFCC and race announcer Brad Sohner will also host Instagram Live (opens in new tab) during the event.

For riders in the Washington, DC area, organizers have prepared additional Strava challenges on three different routes: a 37km Bronze, 66km Silver, and 100km Gold Medal level ride.

Participants in both events are encouraged to raise funds for the Tragedy Assistance Program for Survivors (TAPS), a beneficiary of the AFCC and a program that assists families of fallen military personnel.

Riders who raise $200 or more will receive a limited edition Team TAPS jersey. Interested riders can set up a fundraising page.

"This year is a little different, but we are very grateful to the Armed Forces Cycling Classic for hosting this AFCC Virtual Challenge Ride and for continuing such a thoughtful partnership in these uncertain times. We are very grateful to the Armed Forces Cycling Classic for hosting the Armed Forces Virtual Challenge Ride," said Bonnie Carroll, President and Founder of TAPS.

"The great thing about these virtual challenge rides is that cyclists from beginner to advanced can ride with Team TAPS.

Organizers will also offer a free replay of the 2019 Clarendon Cup on the Monumental Sports Network, and women's and men's winners Kendall Ryan (Team TIBCO-Silicon Valley Bank) and Eric Young ( Elevate-Webiplex) will also provide newly produced recap programs.

"We hope to inspire cyclists to get out and enjoy the great routes we offer at our Strava Club and participate in Zwift rides," said Arlington Sports president and Armed Forces Cycling Classic founder and event director Robert Raybourn said. 'We look forward to meeting you all in person when we return in 2021.'
