Viviani wants to bring Milan-San Remo closer to the Tour de France

Elia Viviani (Cofidis) is hopeful that Milan-San Remo will be moved to August 22 after the UCI Management Committee and Professional Cycling Council meet next month to discuss calendar revision adjustments.

Milan-San Remo, postponed to March due to a coronavirus outbreak, is now scheduled for August 8, but RCS Sport has requested that La Classissima be moved to August 22, one week before the Tour de France begins. A decision is expected on June 10.

"That would definitely be better. It will give us more time to prepare and we will be closer to the Tour, which starts on August 29," Viviani told La Gazzetta dello Sport (opens in new tab).

Viviani will not set a race schedule until the Milan-San Remo dates are determined. If Milan-San Remo remains in its current slot, he will probably resume competition early with La Route d'Occitanie (August 1-4).

"In any case, Milan-San Remo cannot be the first competition back. If it's on August 8, I can do a small race first; a short stage race like Occitanie in early August would be helpful." [On the other hand, if Milan-San Remo is August 22, it could be the Tour de Pollogne, but it would be a tough route like the Dauphiné. In short, it's still a mystery."

Viviani's immediate plans are more concrete: he will train in Livigno for a month starting June 22, the longest stay at altitude since his preparation for the 2016 Rio Olympics, where he won gold in the omnium.

He hopes to defend that title at next year's Tokyo Olympics, but his main goal for 2020 is the Tour de France, where he will look to end Cofidis' 12-year run without a stage win.

Viviani hinted last week that he plans to compete in the Giro d'Italia (October 3-25) after the Tour, but told "La Gazzetta" that his program has not yet been finalized because the revised UCI calendar has Corsa Rosa clashing with the cobbled classic.

"Nothing is finalized yet," he said. I'll think about it during and after the Tour, seeing how I'm feeling. Last year I was in very good shape after the Tour. At the same level, I would be able to compete in Ghent-Wevelgem, De Panne and Flanders. But as an Italian, I obviously want to be in the Giro if possible."
