Lorena Wiebes leaves Team Parkhotel Valkenburg

Lorena Wiebes is leaving Team Park Hotel Valkenburg by mutual consent, effective Monday, June 1. Wiebes, a Dutch champion, had been trying to leave the team during the off-season after receiving interest from top teams such as Sunweb, CCC-Liv, and Trek Segafredo.

Wiebes turned pro with Parkhotel Valkenburg in 2018 and signed a contract to race for the team through 2021. Last winter, when she tried to get out of that contract, Parkhotel Valkenburg initiated legal proceedings against her.

In early January, Wiebes and Parkhotel Valkenburg reached a settlement in which she agreed to remain with the team temporarily, avoiding a court hearing. As of Monday, the 21-year-old is free to sign elsewhere.

"We are proud to have Lorena on our team for the last few years," Parkhotel Valkenburg manager Esra Trump said in a statement on Sunday (opens in new tab). 'In her junior years, we already saw that she had the potential to develop into one of the top riders in women's cycling. I am very proud that our organization and environment were where that could actually happen.

"It is a shame to see a rider leave after so much success together, but if the match is no longer right, it is time to move on. We are grateful for the years we had with Lauren and wish her all the best in her future endeavors."

Vives won 15 races in 2019, including all three stages and the overall win at the Tour of Chongming Island, the RideLondon Classic, two stages at the Boels Ladies Tour, and the Dutch Road Race Championships She finished the season ranked No. 1 in the UCI world rankings.

In 2020, before the competition was suspended due to a coronavirus outbreak, the Dutchwoman defeated Marta Bastianelli to win the Omloop van het Haegeland.
