Lorena Weaves Joins Team Sunweb

Lorena Wiebes has left Team Parkhotel Valkenburg by mutual consent and joined Team Sunweb, signing a four-year contract until the end of 2024.

The 21-year-old Dutch national champion turned professional with Parkhotel Valkenburg in 2018, signing a contract through 2021. When she tried to get out of that contract and race for a WorldTour team, Parkhotel Valkenburg initiated legal proceedings against her.

In January, Wiebes and Parkhotel Valkenburg reached a settlement that avoided a court hearing, as she agreed to remain with the team temporarily. As of Monday, she was free to sign elsewhere, and Team Sunweb quickly confirmed her contract.

"I am very eager to be a part of Team Sunweb, to grow with them and continue to develop as a rider," Vives explained.

"This is a very professional and top sporting environment for me and I am confident that the people around me will take me to the next level. I look forward to returning to racing at a safe time for everyone and making my first appearance for the team. Knowing that day will come is what keeps me motivated to train during this unusual and difficult time."

Vives won 15 races in 2019, including the Tour of Chongming Island, the RideLondon Classic, two stages of the Boels Ladies Tour, all three stages of the Dutch Road Race Championships and the overall win.

She finished the season ranked No. 1 in the UCI world rankings. In 2020, before the competition was suspended due to a coronavirus outbreak, he won the Omloop van het Haegeland, beating Marta Bastianelli.

"Lorena is one of the most up-and-coming riders of her generation and will help us take our women's program to the next level," said Team Sunweb director Hans Timmermans.

"When she moved from the junior to the elite level, she made great progress and her sprinting talent brought immediate success. She has also continued to progress in the classics and we are confident that as she matures she will be a key rider for us. Lorena is only 21 years old and will still take time to develop as a rider. We look forward to supporting her development over the next few years.

Team Sunweb's roster includes Colin Rivera, Florche McCaige, and Lianne Lippert, but the addition of Vieves will significantly strengthen the team for the rescheduled 2020 women's race calendar.
