USA Cycling Postpones Olympic Team Announcement in Support of "Against Black Lives Matter" Protests

After a weekend of massive protests across the United States, sparked by the death of George Floyd, USA Cycling postponed the announcement of the long team for the Olympic Games and issued a statement in support of "black lives."

Floyd, a Minneapolis man, died after police officer Derek Shovin knelt on Floyd's neck for nine minutes. Shovin was charged with murder.

Over the weekend, protests were held across the country, including in Colorado Springs, where USA Cycling is based, and near Denver; a USA Cycling spokesman called the long team's announcement "tone deaf" and issued this statement on social media:

" As a leader in the American cycling community, USA Cycling understands that we have been part of the problem in inequality and representation in our sport. No amount of talk will change the past. We must use our position to take action to embrace, lift up, and ride with black members of the cycling family to ensure equality, equity, transparency, and dignity.

"Riding a bike is a privilege, a safe exploration of the streets and trails of this country. We are proud to be ambassadors of this privilege.

"USA Cycling is committed to using its voice and position as the national governing body of a sport that continues to grow in its inclusion to drive necessary change.

We ride with you.
