Deceuninck-QuickStep has announced its first team training camp since the COVID-19 coronavirus pandemic swept Europe in March. An unspecified number of riders will train at a training camp in northern Belgium in mid-June, prior to the start of the cycling season in August. These riders will most likely be part of a classic group targeting one-day races scheduled for August and October.
Earlier this month, Israel Startup Nation held a limited training camp in northern Israel, but the Detunink Quickstep camp will be the first time a significant portion of the World Tour team has come together since the season stopped two months ago It will be.
During the three-day camp, the team will be based in a house in Flanders rather than in a hotel.
The team's medical staff will also conduct COVID-19 testing on all participating team members and will enforce strict medical protocols throughout the camp, which will involve scouting the route of several "spring" classics.
"Most of the players have been following a planned program set by the coaches for several weeks, so it's more about bringing the group together than having extensive training sessions," said team coach Kane Pilgrim.
"It will also be an opportunity to scout cobbled classic routes like Flanders and Ghent-Wevelgem. I would love to ride Roubaix too, but it might be complicated now that we have to cross the border."
"Above all, it is important to bring together a group that has been apart for such a long time and have fun on the bike."
"We are looking forward to the Roubaix race," said Pilgrim.
The team is also planning a high-altitude training camp in June, but details have not yet been finalized.
The team is currently working to secure a location for a high-altitude training camp before the new season begins in August-November.
An accessible location in the French or Italian Alps is considered desirable, but planning a full team camp in the middle of the summer season will be tough.
AG2R La Mondiale will set up camp in Sestriere in mid-June, while Bahrain McLaren has Italy, Austria, and Slovenia as potential locations.
