The new 3T Exploro Racemax proves that wider is better for gravel bikes.

3T pushes the limits of gravel bike design with its new RaceMax frameset.

With its latest Exploro frame variant, 3T brings science to the gravel maximization debate, proving that there is such a thing as an "ideal width" when it comes to tire size.

After careful study of actual gravel riding trends, 3T engineers and product planners recognized that the ideal tire profile does exist. 3T is obsessed with aerodynamics and has earned a reputation for something that many gravel riders don't consider important: "the ability to ride in the air.

Others have found the 3T to be a good fit for their needs.

Unlike others, 3T believes aero is important everywhere, especially on gravel. In order to get the best possible combination of wide tire traction, ride comfort, and overall bike aerodynamics, 3T engineers have created a new, extremely sturdy frame for the Exploro RaceMax.

The oversized downtube is designed to work with the super-sized tires that rotate between the front fork legs. From the side, the rear triangle of the Exploro RaceMax clearly prioritizes aero while still providing plenty of mud clearance, which is important for a gravel bike.

3T has determined that tire size and shape have a significant impact on how a gravel bike rides, both in terms of grip, comfort, and aerodynamics. All tires come in sizes specified by the manufacturer, but these numbers are often inaccurate due to differences in rim size and post-setup inflation pressures. 3T used the tire measurement methods WAM ( measured width) and RAM (measured radius) were created.

Through experimentation, 3T learned that the ideal WAM size for gravel bike tires for most riders is 35-42 mm. This frameset was specifically designed to be the fastest around these dimensions, resulting in a gravel bike that looks imposing, yet promises a wattage-saving, supple ride on technical roads and mild trails.

The 3T Exploro RaceMax also rolls huge tires, up to 61mm WAM, for riders who need huge casing size and air volume. This large clearance is targeted at gravel riders and dirt tourers, providing additional grip and comfort that can be the difference between running and walking long sections.

As a rough guide, the 61mm WAM sizing corresponds to about 15% larger than a 2.1" tire. Despite this size, 3T claims that RaceMax maintains 90% of the aerodynamics enjoyed when rolling the recommended 35-42mm WAM rubber on 61mm WAM tires.

To optimize the aerodynamic balance of the new gravel bike's frame and tires, 3T recommends using 160mm hydraulic brake rotors.

The new Exploro RaceMax is available in six different frame sizes, ranging from what 3T classifies as XXS to the traditional 61cm. Prices start at €3,200 for the frame and €4,200 to €7,800 for the build.
