CAS to Hear Important Russian Case in November

The Court of Arbitration for Sport announced on November 2 the dates of an important trial that will determine whether Russia will be banned from competing as a country in the Olympic Games and World Championships and from hosting major competitions for four years. The court will hear evidence in the trial from November 2-5 this year.

The World Anti-Doping Agency recommended a four-year ban in December after Russia failed to comply with the terms of its reinstatement agreement.

WADA demanded that the Russian Anti-Doping Agency (RUSADA) hand over all data from the Moscow laboratory involved in the doping positive cover-up. However, when the data was belatedly provided to WADA, investigators found evidence that the data had been falsified.

If CAS were to rule against Russia, Russian athletes would be forced to compete unattached in major tournaments and would not be able to host international championships.

In April, WADA announced that it had reported the names of 298 Russian athletes to 28 different anti-doping organizations and provided documentary evidence of possible anti-doping rule violations.

In December, the UCI said that Russian athletes wishing to participate in the Olympic Games and World Championships "must prove their integrity on an individual basis."
