Although World Tour racing is not scheduled to resume until August, Zdenek Stibal (Detunink Quickstep) resumed competitive action on Tuesday by competing in a local race in Plzen, Czech Republic.
Since the Czech Republic lifted its state of emergency last month, restrictions on the hosting of sporting events have eased. The country was one of the first in Europe to be placed on alert in March due to a coronavirus pandemic.
Stejbal competed in the second round of the IL Sano Cup on Tuesday at the 66 km circuit in Pilsen, finishing fourth in a race made up of Czech-based riders. Petr Kelemen (CCC Development Team) won the race ahead of Denis Lugovac (AC Sparta Prague) and Ondrej Libin (Lafkarna Idea Cycling Team).
Steibal carried number 1; according to Het Nieuwsblad (opens in new tab), he said, "I already participated here 20 years ago, so it was like going back in time."
Deceuninck-QuickStep announced this week that part of the team will be in northern Belgium later this month for its first group training camp since the coronavirus outbreak interrupted the cycling season in March.
The three-day camp will scout cobbled classic routes, including the Tour of Flanders and Ghent-Wevelgem.
Stejbal has yet to finalize his race program for the remainder of 2020, but the October cobbled classics are all set and October will be his focus in the revised calendar. The Tour de Flanders will be held on October 18, and Paris-Roubaix on October 25.
"It is strange that Flanders and Roubaix will be held in the fall, but it is a great pleasure to know when they will be held," Stybar said last month. [October should be a pretty busy month and it will be tough to see what our program will look like once we get back to competition, but I can't wait to talk to the sports directors and start working on these goals."
Stejbal started the season on a high note with a stage win at the Vuelta a San Juan in January. He also competed in the opening weekend and Paris-Nice before the COVID-19 pandemic interrupted the cycling season.
