Dygert, Courtney, and Van Garderen Top U.S. Long Team for Tokyo Olympics

Chloe Dygert, Kate Courtney, Tejay Van Garderen, and Ian Garrison are just some of the athletes named to USA Cycling's 38-member long team heading to the Tokyo Olympics, postponed from July 23 to August 8, 2021.

USA Cycling announced the road, track, and mountain bike long teams Thursday via live streaming.

The U.S. so far has two men in track (two in the Madison and one in the Omnium) and a full endurance representative in women's track and one sprinter in the individual sprint and keirin.

On the road, the U.S. has four women in the road race and two in the time trial, but only two men in the road race and time trial.

The slots for BMX and mountain biking have been postponed due to race cancellations this season.

Dygert won the elite women's individual time trial at the UCI Road World Championships in Yorkshire last September, automatically qualifying for the Olympic team. She leads a group of top runners that includes Colin Rivera, national champion Ruth Winder, Taylor Wiles, Leah Thomas, Lauren Stevens, Katherine Hall, former world time trial champion Amber Neben, and Krista Dobel-Hickok.

"It's always an honor to wear US colors," Dygert said. With [the Olympics] postponed, we can focus on next year and do the best we can." It's a setback for everyone. We'll get through this and be ready for next year."

Dygert was also named to the elite women's track team along with Jennifer Valente, Emma White, Lily Williams, Christina Burch, Kendall Ryan, Megan Jastrub, Maddie Godbee, and Mandy Marquardt

She was also a member of the women's track elite team.

Dygert and Valente were part of the Team Pursuit team at the 2016 Olympics, where they won a silver medal, and this season they were part of the World Championship winning team with White and Williams.

"It's expected (to win). You don't go into a race to lose. Going into the competition, I'm prepared to face any pressure, any situation. I want to win and that's my mentality. I'm not going to show up just to get on the podium. So I'm working very hard to try to win gold in every event I compete in."

Tejay Van Garderen was named to the elite men's road team along with Ian Garrison, Alex Howes, Lawson Craddock, Brandon McNulty, Neilson Powles, and Sepp Kuss. According to the press release, two of these seven athletes were automatic nominations, while the rest were nominated at the coaches' discretion based on their overall performance in international competitions.

The men's track elite team includes Adrian Hegivali, Daniel Holloway, and Gavin Huber. Of these, only one was an automatic nomination; two were discretionary nominations based on their World Cup and World Championship results. Not selected for the team was Ashton Lambie, the individual Pursuit world record holder.

Former world champion Kate Courtney will lead the elite women's team in mountain biking along with Chloe Woodruff, Lee Davison, Erin Hack, Hayley Batten, and Hannah Finchamp. All six women were automatically selected to the team, but Courtney was the only mountain biker automatically selected to the final squad because of her fifth-place finish at the 2019 UCI Mountain Bike World Championships in Monsantoan, Canada.

The women's team is ranked second in the country in the Olympic qualifying rankings. According to a press release, two additional members of the women's long team will join Courtney in Tokyo if they maintain this ranking in 2021.

"Representing my country has always been an honor for me, but the Olympics are the pinnacle of the sport, and to end up there and qualify to represent has been a lifelong dream of mine," Courtney said.

"I may have to wait another year, but I am excited and really looking forward to representing the U.S. in Tokyo."

Chris Blevins and Keegan Swenson were named to the men's mountain bike long team, both of whom are discretionary nominees. The current national rankings for the men's team only allow for one finalist to be selected for the Olympic team.
