The UCI has announced updates to the revised late-season calendar for the men's and women's World Tours, including several schedule changes and event cancellations due to the COVID-19 coronavirus pandemic. In particular, the Italian monument Il Lombardia has been moved from October 31 to August 15, while three events on the women's top-class calendar have had to be canceled.
On May 5, the sport's governing body announced a revised men's and women's World Tour calendar to replace plans canceled due to the coronavirus pandemic.
The new calendar includes the Tour de France (August 29-September 20), the Giro d'Italia (October 2-25), and the Vuelta a España (October 20-November 8). Five monuments have also been rescheduled, with Milano-Sanremo on August 8 and Lombardia on August 15.In Wednesday's edition of La Gazzetta dello Sport, RCS Sport indicated that Milan-San Remo is expected to be changed to August 15 and Il Lombardia to August 8.
RCS Sport expressed outrage at the calendar change, as it had reportedly requested that Milan-San Remo be held the weekend before the Tour de France. Under the new calendar, the World Tour will open with Strade Bianche on August 1, Milan-San Remo on August 8, and Il Lombardia on August 15. Tirreno-Adriatico will be held September 7-14.
"The calendar announced today by the UCI is approved. As per tradition, Strade Bianche will be the opening round of the one-day race, followed by Milano-Sanremo as the first classic monument and Il Lombardia," RCS Sport said in a press release.
"At this point, the idea is to start the race safely and organize it in the best way possible. These calendar dates are a new challenge and will go down in cycling history.
There have been other changes to the men's World Tour, including the cancellations of Eschborn-Frankfurt in Germany, Dwars Doerr-Fränderen in Belgium, and the RideLondon-Sully Classic in England.
The EuroEyes Cyclassics Hamburg in Germany will now take place on October 3, and the Gree-Tour of Guangxi in China, originally scheduled for October 15-20, will now take place November 5-10.
The first revision of the Women's World Tour retained 18 of the 22 events scheduled for August 1-November 8. However, three events had already publicly announced their cancellation due to health and travel restrictions surrounding COVID-19, including the Postnord UCI WWT Volgorda West Sweden TTT and road race (Sweden) and the Ladies Tour of Norway. Additionally, the Tour of Guangxi in China has been rescheduled from October 20 to November 10.
The UCI also announced that the 2020 UCI Junior Track Cycling World Championships had been postponed by one year and that the 2021 UCI Mountain Bike Marathon World Championships, which were to be held in Manizales (Colombia), were now set for Elba (Italy).
"Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, several UCI World Championships will not be contested in 2020. In view of this unprecedented situation, the UCI Management Committee has decided to make an exception and allow UCI World Champions who are unable to defend their titles this year to wear the rainbow jersey until the next round of the relevant World Championships," the UCI said in a statement.
