Balde and Nessen Lead AG2R to "Unprecedented" Season

AG2R La Mondiale has announced further details and rosters for the resumption of racing this summer. As expected, Romain Bardet will resume action at the Route d'Occitanie (August 1-4), the CIC Mont Ventoux Dénivelé Challenge (August 6), and the Critérium du Dauphiné (August 12-16).

Although not announced on Friday, the team and Bardet have already confirmed that the Frenchman will also compete in the Tour de France in August and September, even though the pre-COVID-19 schedule had Bardet missing the Tour for the Giro d'Italia.

Bardet's contract is also up and he is in discussions about moving to Team Sunweb in 2021, but he will use the Dauphiné as his final warm-up race for the Tour. He has twice finished on the podium at the Dauphiné and won a stage in 2015. Bardet is also eyeing a berth in the UCI Road World Championships if it is held in Switzerland as originally planned.

Benoit Cosnefrois, who won his only race this year at AG2R La Mondiale, will return to racing at the Tour de Ain (August 7-9) and the Criterium du Dauphiné (August 12-16) before racing in the Tour de France.

Oliver Naessen, the team's leading classics specialist who signed a contract extension earlier this month, will resume his season at Strade Bianche (August 1) before taking on Milan-Turin (August 5) and Milan-San Remo (August 8). The Belgian rider scored his first Monument podium in Milan-San Remo 12 months ago. He will also compete in the Tour de France later in the year before turning his attention to the cobbled classics.

"The entire staff of sporting directors and coaches have worked together to establish the most consistent schedule possible, and we know it will be a dense schedule with no real breaks until the finish of the Vuelta, which ends on November 8," sporting director Laurent Biondi said.

"This new schedule will allow riders like Oliver Naessen to discover Strade Bianche and Milan Turin before defending his podium in Milan-San Remo last year. Athletes like Romain Bardet will also have the opportunity to ride the Route d'Occitanie, a route they have not participated in since 2013.

And after the Tour de France and the World Championships, there is also the chance to take on the classics in Wallonia. The entire team is extremely motivated and hopes that the number of pandemic cases will continue to decrease by the time racing resumes. It will be an unprecedented season, but we are all looking forward to getting back to competition"

Racing has been suspended since the widespread outbreak of COVID-19 in Europe; the UCI has created a post-lockdown calendar and all three Grand Tours are now scheduled to run for 71 days.

On Friday, the UCI announced plans for health checks, inspections, and a "bubble" involving teams and races.
