U23 riders have already broken Gilbert's "La Redoute" record

Philippe Gilbert's record on the Côte de la Redoute lasted only 24 hours before it was broken by Gijs Riemrise of the Jumbo Visma Development team.

Gilbert was challenged by his brother on this iconic climb, often decisive in Liège-Bastogne-Liège, for the KOM of Strava, which he won in 2011.

The former world champion completed the 1.6km climb with an average gradient of 9.5% in a time of 4:25, shaving about 17 seconds off the previous record held by Romain Bardet.

On Friday morning, Gilbert posted on social media, slapping down a challenge to the other competitors: "Break this record!"

Reem Rise, a 20-year-old Dutch rider, did just that on Friday at the 106-km La Redoute midway point. Riding at an average speed of 21.2 km/h, he shaved 3 seconds off Gilbert's time, clocking 4:22.

"Hey Philippe Gilbert, your KOM was short," the Jumbo Visma development team posted on social media.

"Ha ha ha, little guy," wrote Jumbo-Visma's Robert Gesink.

Reamrise is in his third year of U23 and describes himself as a climber. Last year he won the Top Competition uphill time trial, and this year he was called up to Jumbo-Visma's elite team at the Tour de la Provence, where he finished 33rd overall and got his first taste of professional racing.
