Terpstra discharged from hospital

Niki Terpstra (Total Direct Energie) left the hospital after suffering serious injuries in a training crash.

Former Paris-Roubaix and Tour de Flanders winner Niki Terpstra was airlifted to the hospital after losing consciousness after a violent fall during a motor race in the Netherlands on Tuesday.

He was admitted to the intensive care unit where he was diagnosed with head trauma, a broken collarbone, collapsed lung, and back contusion.

He was discharged on Sunday and recovered enough to return home.

"Good news for Father's Day: Niki Terpstra was discharged from the hospital today and can begin his recovery at home," said a statement from SEG Cycling, representing the 36-year-old rider.

"We ask everyone to give our champ and his family the rest and privacy they need for the coming period."

Total Direct Energy doctors have already estimated that Terpstra's recovery from his injuries will take 10 to 12 weeks and that he will not be able to compete in the Tour de France, which begins on August 29.

For Terpstra, the crash is the latest in a series of setbacks since he joined the French second-division team in 2019 after winning Flanders with Deceuninck-QuickStep in 2018. He crashed with a severe concussion in Flanders in 2019 and was later forced to abandon the Tour de France with a fractured scapula.

If he doesn't make the Tour de France, he should still be able to make it to the cobbled classics in October. He is also still in transfer negotiations with Total Direct Energie, as his two-year contract with the company expires at the end of this year.
