Barguil to make Paris-Roubaix debut in 2020

Warren Barguil (Arkea-Samsic) will take advantage of the end-of-season date of October 25th to feed his adventurous spirit and rejoin Paris-Roubaix this season.

Varg, who will support Nairo Quintana and is seeking a stage win in the Tour de France, will lead the team in the Ardennes Classique in October.

Barguil is known for his climbing ability, and although he has never competed in Paris-Roubaix as a professional, he has fared well when the Tour de France has ridden the cobbles of the northern hellhole in recent years: in 2018, he finished 15th on a stage to Roubaix, and in 2015, he finished 15th in Cambrai with stage winner Tony He was in a large group that came home 3 seconds ahead of Martin.

Paris-Roubaix was postponed from its normal April date due to the COVID-19 coronavirus pandemic, and the late position in the revised calendar offered Barguil a chance to compete. [Barguil told Le Télégramme (opens in new tab). I'm good on cobblestones and now, at the end of the year, is the perfect time. Paris-Roubaix is a legendary race.

"It means running the Flèche Wallonne, Liège-Bastogne-Liège, and Amstel Gold Races, followed by Paris-Roubaix in two weeks.

Barguil will also make his first appearance in another 2020 monument as part of Arkea Samsic, which will look to lead Nasser Bouhanni to victory in Milan-San Remo, which has been rescheduled for August 8.

"I ran 300 km in training the other day to gain distance," Barguil revealed.

"I'm going to help Nasser and I want to be in the final. Yes, that's why I ran 300 km in training. Punchers and endurance athletes do well in Milan-San Remo."

Barguil has not raced since being disqualified for drafting behind a crashed team car on the first day in Paris-Nice. Barguil finished second in the Drome Classic the previous weekend and will resume his campaign in the La Route d'Occitanie stage race in southwestern France on August 1.

"At the start of the season, Nairo was the best climber in the world and no one could keep up with him," said Barguil, 10th overall in the 2019 Tour.

"If he arrives at the start of the Tour in that condition, you would support him. Without hesitation, I will serve him. It's not every day you get to be a teammate of a rider who has a Tour de France podium in his legs. I'm not going to cry over it. I don't hate my job. If they thank me and I get the same in return later, I have no problem."

But Barguil admitted that he will leave Nice on August 29 with personal ambitions. While Quintana's acquisition of the yellow jersey is the focus of Arkea Samsic, and the team has already decided that Bouhanni will not participate in the Tour, Barguil hopes to increase La Grande Boucle's number of stage victories.

"Last year we had a good overall ranking and we didn't take enough risks. This time I can compete in an alliance with Nairo."

"Personally, I would rather win a stage than finish fifth in the Tour de France. If Nairo gets on the podium in Paris and I get my arms around a stage, my Tour will be more than a success."[25
