Zwift Builds New Worlds of Mont Ventoux and Champs Elysees for Virtual Tour de France

Professional riders will race on the virtual Mont Ventoux and Champs-Elysées next month as Zwift builds a new world for the online Tour de France.

As Cyclingnews revealed earlier this month, Tour de France organizer ASO is partnering with Zwift to host a virtual Grand Boucle for both men and women during July. The e-sports race will take place over three weekends during the Tour, will consist of six stages for both men and women, and will run from July 4-19.

Further details have been announced and four of the six stages will take place in the new Zwift world named France, with the fifth stage on July 18 at the Chalet Reynard (the point where the exposed road surface of the mountainside appears through the trees) in the middle of Mont Ventoux. It will be a queen stage with a finish at the Chalet Reynard in the middle of Mont Ventoux.

The stage is 22.9 km long, with a 15 km climb from Bedoin to Chalet Reynard, with an average gradient of 7.5%.

The following day, the Virtual Tour de France will stage the Champs-Elysées in Paris, mimicking the finale of the actual event.

The riders will complete six laps of a 6.6 km circuit that gently climbs up to the Arc de Triomphe and down to the Tuileries Park. [The first two will take place at Zwift's flagship Watopia World, the first being four laps of a 9.1 km circuit on the reverse of the "Hilly" route, and the second on the "Mountain" route, a 29.5 km course with a 682 m elevation gain.

On the second weekend (July 11-12), the race will leave Watopia for its new home in France. [Meanwhile, stage 4 will take place on a route named "Casse Patte." Meaning "leg break" in French, the route is undulating and offers few rest stops. Athletes complete two laps of the 22.9 km circuit, with an elevation gain of 310 m.

The race concludes on the weekend of July 18-19 (the original final weekend) with the Ventoux Stage and the Paris Finale.

The yellow jersey will be worn in the Virtual Tour de France, but no overall individual standings will be set. Instead, like the recent Zwift Tour For All, it will be based on a team competition with points awarded for stage finishes, KOMs, and sprints.

The de facto yellow jersey is worn by the rider designated by the top team as captain for the subsequent stage. Yellow jersey points (GC) are awarded to the first 25 riders in each stage, with the winner receiving 50 points.

As in the Tour de France, there is a polka-dot jersey for the mountains, a green jersey for points, a white jersey for the best young rider, and an award for the most combative rider.

For the polka-dot jersey and green jersey, points are awarded for the climb, intermediate, and finish sprint, respectively, and the team with the highest total can nominate a rider to wear the jersey. Only one young rider per team is allowed, and there must be at least one rider under the age of 25. There is no most combative jersey, but three riders will score points in each stage.

The points for all classes are then combined to determine the team class.

According to Cycling News, at least 15 teams have announced their participation, and 10 television stations covering 130 countries have signed up to broadcast the event.

The Tour de France will run from August 29 to September 20, with the road race stage starting in Nice.
