Trusted De Tunink Quickstep (open in new tab) domesticians Dries Devenyns and Iljo Caisse have agreed to new contracts for 2021. The Belgian team retains its core strengths and is working to adapt to the growth and talent of Julian Alaphilippe and Remco Evenpole.
On Friday, Yves Lampert (open in new tab) signed a new contract with Deveninck Quickstep to wear the team's blue and white until the end of 2022. Devenyns and Casey have now agreed to a contract for 2021. Team manager Patrick Lefebvre has already said that he intends to keep much of the current team in 2021.
"These strange times have been hard for all of us," he said. 'First we wanted to deal with the expiration of our own riders' contracts. It's been a special year, and we don't want them to wait until October or November with the stress of still not having a contract."
"Dries did amazing things before the lockdown. Think of Cadel Evans and his amazing win in the Great Ocean Road Race, both men have proven their commitment to the team on too many occasions to count, they are over 30 years old and may not race for another 5 years, and they have done a great job in the last two years. But we know exactly what they bring to the team and what we can expect from them. Please take this as a clear vote of confidence from us."
Devenyns turns 37 on July 22 and will celebrate his birthday at the team's high altitude camp in the Italian Dolomites. He stepped up and won the Cadel Evans Great Ocean Road Race in early February after the attack stayed away; although he has only seven wins in his 15-year professional career, his experience and racing skills are highly regarded.
"I have been hoping for this contract renewal. I am happy to have agreed so quickly. It is a sign of trust from the team to me and vice versa," Devenyns said.
"I am very happy to continue to run with the Wolfpack. I'm also going to do everything I can to help the team win next year. I may be a little older, but physically I'm still going strong." Caisse, who turned 37 in December, is known for his lead-out skills and hard work as a domestique, in addition to his seven wins at Ghent Six Day.
At the Vuelta a San Juan in Argentina in January 2019, he managed to weather the storm after being expelled for pretending to have sex behind a waitress for a photo op during a pre-race training stop at a cafe. He had to apologize and pay a fine.
He is the oldest member of the team and 2021 will be his 12th season with Lefebvre's team.
"I think only Tom Boonen can say that. Either way, I'm very happy. Patrick Lefevere gave me the opportunity to sign a new contract after a strange period of almost no racing. [My dream is to continue cycling until my 40th birthday on December 21, 2022. I am one year closer to achieving that. I intend to keep working hard to get there. After a year like this, I certainly did not want to quit."
"I have worked with the same people here for many years. We have won many races together and we never get tired of it. On the contrary, the urge to win is inherent in this team. It's addictive."
