Dutch Road Championships to be held in August

The Dutch Cycling Federation (KNWU) has approved a change in dates for the UCI-designated road championships to be held August 21-23.

Originally scheduled for June, the championships were canceled in May after the Dutch government suspended all sporting events until September 1 to contain the coronavirus outbreak. However, after weeks of blockades, the virus was largely under control and the government decided to allow mass start races from July 1. Last year's event was held in Ede, where Lorena Wiebes and Fabio Jacobsen took the titles, and in August the U23 men's and elite men's and women's championships will be held on a 7.3km circuit in Drenthe, incorporating the VAM- berg, a short but steep climb over the landfill used in the Ronde van Drenthe, will be incorporated.

Torwald Veneberg, managing director of the KNWU, announced that organizer Courage Events, in cooperation with the city of Midden Drenthe and the province of Drenthe, had finalized plans and was pleased to host the championship.

"For many riders, this is an event to look forward to," said Veneberg in a press release. Given that social concerns took precedence for several months, it would have been easy to explain if the event could not be held this year." [But now that the sporting event is allowed again, we as a federation look forward to an important race.

"We decided to host the Dutch Championships because it is an important moment for sponsors to gain exposure, especially for the Continental and women's teams. Especially since we haven't had a tournament in the last few months."

"With the cooperation of all parties, we as a union can and will contribute to give this season an extra sparkle.
