Movistar Aims to Become First 100% Sustainable Cycling Organization

Movistar Team has announced that its Spanish headquarters will gradually convert its men's and women's WorldTour teams to a hybrid model of solar panels and team cars to become part of the world's first 100% sustainable cycling organization.

Cycling is an environmentally friendly pastime and mode of transportation, but professional cycling uses cars and is not necessarily environmentally friendly.

The team announced on its website on Tuesday that it has measured its carbon footprint and that 175,000 kg of carbon dioxide (CO2) are generated annually by the team's vehicles and the energy used by its headquarters in Pamplona, Spain.

Movistar said it aims to replace the team vehicle with a hybrid model to reduce CO2 emissions and that the team headquarters will use solar panels to utilize 100% renewable energy. The team also pledged to support green projects that promote the use of bicycles.

"At Abarca Sports, we want the Movistar team to be the first top-ranked team that is fully sustainable in its activities," Miguel Gravalos, CEO of Abarca Sports, which owns the men's and women's Movistar teams, said Tuesday in a said in a video released on the team's website on Tuesday.

"We are a cycling team working from the present to the future," added men's team manager Eusebio Unzué.

The team's first step is to obtain the seal of approval from Spain's Ministry of Ecological Transition (MITECO), and they have already involved staff and riders in sustainability efforts.
