Forkmods save 15mm through-axle wheels

For riders with a favorite wheelset, the evolution of axle standards can be tricky.

Few front hubs can easily accommodate the various through-axle sizes, and when the cycling industry introduces a new standard, it means rebuilding an expensive wheelset or buying a new fork.

As road and gravel bikes now accept the 12mm thru-axle standard, riders using 15mm axle wheels may find themselves in the predicament of having to invest in a new front wheel or fork.

Thanks to Forkmods, a more affordable solution is now available. As the name implies, the company produces axle adapter kits ranging from 15mm to 12mm for a variety of frames.

The inspiration for this through-axle solution came from the frustrations experienced by Forkmods founder Adrian Hodgson, who wanted to upgrade the wheelset on his 2016 Trek Domane 6.9 disc found that he had few options due to the fork's 15mm axle standard.

After scouring the Internet for aftermarket kits, Hodgson eventually found a possible component and suggested a joint venture.

The Forkmods kit consists of replacement threaded ends, flange reducer sleeves, and aluminum 12mm through-axles. Since different front fork/wheel combinations require different proprietary parts, Hodgson produces a number of kits that are specific to particular brands and their individual models.

The company's product inventory currently includes conversion kits for Specialized, Trek, Focus, Fox, 3T, Linsky, and Merida, and its portfolio of new bike models and forks continues to expand.

For riders who want more wheelset convergence between frames, the Forkmods kit is a relatively inexpensive bridging component at only A$120.
