Dutch Federation Considers Future Swiss National Championships

The Dutch road national championships could be held in Switzerland in the next few years, Dutch media reported Thursday.

Torwald Werneberg, director of the Dutch Cycling Federation (KNWU), told NOS.nl that they are seriously considering holding the championships in the Swiss Alps. [Dutch climbers Sam Ommen (Sunweb) and the Jumbo-Visma duo of Tom Dumoulin and Steven Kruijswijk have a better chance of winning, but Annemiek van Fluten, arguably the best Dutch climber in the women's pro peloton ( Mitchelton Scott) is the reigning road race world champion, but has only won one national road race, in 2012 in Kerkrade in the Dutch province of Limburg.

"I first contacted Austria, the region where the world championships were held [in Innsbruck in 2018]," Veneberg told NOS. 'Then I also spoke with the Swiss federation, the Swiss regions, and the organization behind the Tour de Suisse.'

Veneberg admitted that some Dutch cycling officials were less than enthusiastic about the proposal.

"As a team, we want to keep costs as low as possible. Switzerland is an expensive country.

"We understand that we will be asking parents and clubs to go there," Veneberg said of the other categories below the elite level for girls and boys.

According to NOS, if the Dutch championships were to be held in Switzerland or another mountainous country, the event would probably be held in 2022 or 2023 at the earliest, even if that barrier is overcome.
