Tuns Commits to Bahrain McLaren Leader Landa at Tour de France

Dylan Theuns said he is ready to help Bahrain McLaren team leader Mikel Landa in his efforts to win the 2020 Tour de France.

"The team has great ambitions for Landa's ranking and we will help him," Theuns told Het Laatste Nieuws on Thursday. 'Maybe he will get some freedom here and there, but our first objective is to make a run for him and we have a strong team with Wout Poels, Damiano Caruso, and Pello Bilbao.'

Bahrain McLaren has yet to announce the final eight riders for this year's Tour, but last month we assessed the potential of a WorldTour team that would include Teuns to put Poels, Caruso, Bilbao, and Landa on the podium in Paris.

Teuns said he would be happy in a Domestique de Luxe-like role at the Tour, the 28-year-old told Cycling News at the team's training camp last December.

"Winning a stage at the Tour was a turning point in my career," he told HLN.be on Thursday, outrunning Trek-Segafredo's Giulio Ciccone for the biggest win of his career on last year's sixth stage, La Planche des Belles Fils. He recalled his performance.

"My position in the team has become very high. I noticed that something has changed among the fans. People who normally don't watch the race are now watching the Tour."

If Tuns wants to win a Grand Tour in the future, that might mean changing teams, but at the moment he hopes to stay with Bahrain McLaren.

"I feel very good here, so staying is my first option," he said, but admitted that he has had offers from several other teams. I won't name names, but I'm interested."

"Normally I would be a little nervous in this situation," said Theuns, whose contract expires at the end of this season.

"If you're at the end of your contract, it's normal to want to put in a good performance as soon as possible to show yourself, but now that I'm not racing anyway, I've found it easier to put those worries aside," he said.
