The colors and logo of the Manuela Fundación may soon be seen in the professional peloton.
According to the Spanish newspapers Marca (open in new tab) and AS (open in new tab), the nonprofit headed by Francisco Huertas, despite claiming to have legally acquired the team's holding company, if not its world tour license, has now Mitchelton Scott's project has been abandoned.
Owner and longtime financier Jerry Ryan apparently clashed with Manuela Fundación's assumption that it would take over all aspects of the team and make it a Spanish team starting in 2021, when it called off the acquisition just a week after the deal was announced.
Ryan subsequently decisively overhauled the management team, with Shayne Bannan and Alvaro Crespi, who had been deeply involved in the negotiations, leaving the team, and Brent Copeland was named general manager and Darach McQuaid as chairman.
"It's a blow because it's hard to go from signed and sealed to nothing," a spokesman for Manuela Fundacion told AS.
"There is no way that we could pay up and have our home base and license remain in Australia instead of Granada in the future when there was an agreement in everyone's favor to spend the rest of this season on a half-and-half basis."
When Ryan broke the deal, Manuela Fundacion initially doubled down, claiming that they had signed a deal to buy the team's holding company through Banan and that they had taken control of the team's infrastructure and staff contracts. They then reportedly offered Ryan 10 million euros to purchase the World Tour license.
However, nothing has officially changed, and Manuela Fundacion is apparently beginning to consider other options instead of taking legal action.
According to Marca, Huertas is still eager to join World Tour Cycling and is already in talks with other teams.
"There are other teams on the market, which we will evaluate later. The good thing about the Mitchelton option was the immediacy because of this season. We know there are sponsors who don't intend to continue, and we'll wait and see," a spokesperson told AS.
Many sponsors and teams have been severely affected by the coronavirus outbreak, with many teams imposing pay cuts and transfer deferrals on their players. ccc teams are actively looking for a new sponsor to keep the team alive in 2021 after the ccc announced the withdrawal of its sponsor. They are searching for a new sponsor.
