Nairo Quintana avoids serious injury after contact with a car.

Nairo Quintana (Arkea-Samsic) escaped serious injury after being hit by a car while training in Motavita, Colombia, on Friday.

The municipality's Twitter account posted news of the accident, saying that the driver of the car "improperly maneuvered" and collided with a Tour de France candidate.

Quintana was not transported to the hospital, but returned home and was treated by his personal physician. His manager, Giuseppe Acquadro, said the injuries were not serious.

"Apparently it's nothing serious, and we hope so," Acquadro told La Gazzetta dello Sport. 'But he has a bad blow to his left knee and is in the hospital for X-rays. He was doing an uphill test and was going full speed. A car hit him in the mirror and he fell to the ground."

Quintana posted a video on the team's social media on Friday afternoon, explaining the incident: "He came up behind me and I couldn't see him or anything. I have a small scratch, a bruised right knee and a bruised left thigh, and this is where I hit the rearview mirror of the car that hit me," Quintana said.

The 30-year-old winner of the 2014 Giro d'Italia and 2017 Vuelta a EspaƱa was off to a brilliant start to the 2020 season before the COVID-19 pandemic interrupted all racing.

Quintana won the Tour de la Provence and the Tour des Alpes Maritimes et du Var, and he took a stage win in Paris-Nice on the climb to Val de Broglie-La Colmiane, finishing sixth overall.

He will lead Arkea Samsic in the Tour de France and will travel to Europe on a special chartered flight on July 19 with other top Colombian pros, including 2019 Tour champion Egan Bernal.
