No broken bones in Nairo Quintana after fall during training

Arkea Samsic announced that Nairo Quintana did not suffer any broken bones after being hit by a car while training on Friday. While riding in Motavita, Colombia, the car "improperly maneuvered" and collided with Tour de France contender Nairo Quintana.

After initially returning home and being treated by his personal physician, Quintana underwent a number of tests, including X-rays, ultrasounds, and an MRI scan.

A team statement released Saturday morning confirmed that Quintana had no broken bones, but had injured his knee and would need two weeks of rest to recover.

"In the early afternoon Nairo Quintana was seen by his doctor and then underwent various tests: an X-ray, an ultrasound, and an MRI scan. [Fortunately, no fractures were diagnosed, but Nairo is suffering from multiple trauma to his right knee and, as suggested by the orthopedic surgeon who evaluated him, will need two weeks of complete rest.

"Nevertheless, Nairo is confident that this enforced rest will not affect his preparation for the Tour de France, his goal for this year.

Quintana, winner of the 2014 Giro d'Italia and 2017 Vuelta a España, posted a video on the team's social media accounts explaining the accident.

"He came up behind me and I didn't see him, I didn't see anything," Quintana said. 'He was on the white line and he hit me. I have a small scratch, a bruised right knee, and a bruised left thigh." That's where he hit the rearview mirror of the car that hit him.

Quintana started the season well, his first race in Arcair before the COVID-19 pandemic interrupted racing in Europe; the 30-year-old won the Tour de la Provence and Tour des Alpes-Maritimes et du Var and summit finishes at Mont Ventoux and Col d'Eze.

In March, he struggled with early crosswinds in Paris-Nice, finishing sixth, but his victory on the final day with a summit finish at Val de Broglie-la-Cormiane cemented his early-season form as a top contender for the Tour de France in September.

In preparation for the race, he will compete in the Tour de l'Ain and the Criterium du Dauphiné in August. A charter flight requested by the Colombian Cycling Federation is likely to carry Quintana and a number of other Colombian riders to Europe in mid-July.
