Vandenberg: I want to race one more year

Classics specialist Stein Vandenberg told the Belgian press that he wants to continue racing in the 2021 season.

"I want to stay with the team," the Belgian rider told Belga on Tuesday at the AG2R training camp in Vaujany in the French Alps. ''I'd like to stay with the team,'' Belga said. There is interest from other teams, but I definitely want to race one more year."

Van den Berg has been with AG2R since 2017, joining from Quick Step the same year as fellow countryman Oliver Naessen.

Vandenberg joined Vincent Lavenu's team from Quick Step and was named to Cycling News magazine's Patrick Lefebvre's "Dream Team for the Classics."

Vandeberg tasted victory in the 2016 Volta a la Comunitat Valenciana stage and also won a stage and the overall at the 2007 Tour of Ireland, but the 185-centimeter-tall rider has primarily served as an important domestique in the Classics has carved out a niche for himself.

"I'm a little disappointed that I didn't show my stuff this year, but that's true of a lot of riders," he said.

"Omloop Het Nieuwsblad and Kuhle Brussel Kuhne missed out due to illness, and then there was the coronavirus pandemic.

"We already have some Belgians on the team, which is fun. 'I'm meeting with team management in mid-July and hopefully I can stay. If it doesn't work out, that's one thing, but I still think I have value as the classic core of the team. So hopefully I can keep racing, both here and with other teams."

According to Het Nieuwsblad, Vandenberg will resume his season with Milan-Torino on August 5, Milan-San Remo on August 8, and the Tour de Wallonie on August 16-19.

He will then complete the Bink Bank Tour (September 29-October 3) and prepare for the team's "spring" classic campaign, which will continue with Ghent-Wevelgem (October 11), Tour de Flanders (October 18), and Paris-Roubaix (October 25).

"I want to have a good run in these one-day races," Vandeberg said. 'And Vandeberg said. 'It's going to be a special race.'
