Steuben Extends Two-Year Contract with Trek Segafredo

Jasper Steuven has signed a two-year contract extension that will keep him with Trek Segafredo through the end of the 2022 season, Het Nieuwsblad (opens in new tab) reported.

Steiven, who won the Omloop Het Nuusblad in February, has attracted strong interest from Israeli startup Nation, where his longtime mentor and former Trek Direktor Sportif Dirk Demol is part of the management team.

Belgian Stuyven chose to remain with Trek Segafredo, where he has spent his entire career since turning pro in 2014. Stuyven turned pro after winning Paris-Roubaix as a junior with high acclaim, and spent his Classics apprenticeship with Fabian Cancellara.

In 2015, he won a stage at the Vuelta a España, and the following year he won solo at the Cune Brussel Cune for his first one-day win.

After a string of consistent results in the 2018 classics, he finished the season strong with a victory on the Deutschland Tour after a disappointing spring campaign last year.

The 28-year-old continued his form in the opening round of the 2020 season, entering the victory break with just over 70km to go and putting in a great performance to win the Omloop Het Nieuwsblad after successfully fending off the challenge of Yves Lampère in a two-up sprint.

The next day, Steuben finished fifth in Coure Brussel-Coulomb, but was unable to carry this form into the spring classics as the season was interrupted in March by a coronavirus outbreak.

When the season resumes, Stuyven will ride the Tour de Pollogne and Tour de France in preparation for the cobbled classics scheduled for October. He will lead the Trek-Segafredo pavé with world champions Mads Pedersen and Edward Theuns.
