Trek Announces New Domane AL Disc

Trek's road bike series has a new model. The U.S.-based bicycle manufacturer has revised its Domane series to be more affordable.

With the Domane AL Disc, Trek product planners are attempting to offer a host of modern cycling technologies at a more affordable price point for those new to road biking or simply looking for the lowest priced road bike.

This most affordable Domane retains the same aluminum construction, but the tubes are joined with a smoother welded profile, creating an overall frame aesthetic that looks more like a carbon road bike.

Not only does the Domane AL Disc have more fluid styling, but Trek engineers and industrial designers have managed to add some of the desirable technology features found on the carbon fiber Domane to the aluminum frame.

The new Domane AL has internally routed cabling that activates the disc brakes, and the frame spins on 12mm thru-axles on both front and rear wheels. The head tube is tapered to increase the contact area with the carbon fork steerer tube, and the Trek provides generous clearance for wider road tires.

The new Domane AL discs are assembled with 32mm rubber, but for riders who want to run wider tires, there is plenty of clearance for tires up to 35mm wide.

Trek has opted for a short and steep geometry profile on the new Domane AL Disc models, clearly targeting riders who prefer a comfortable riding position rather than an overly aero riding position. For reference, the 56 cm size frame has a reach of only 377 mm.

Other frame details include Bontrager Duotrap-S Bluetooth speed and cadence sensors, rear bike rack mounts, and the ability to carry three bottles (two in the main triangle and one under the down tube).

Data collection and safety awareness features include a Blendr stem for easy integration of a cycling computer and riding lights. Trek's Domane AL Disc also has a top tube lunchbox mount.

In all, there are four derivatives, half of which feature mechanical disc brakes, while the more premium derivatives use hydraulic braking power. All Domane AL Disc bikes are equipped with tubeless road tires.

Prices for the new Trek Domane AL Disc start at $1050 (£800) and top out at $1800 (£1600). There is also an AL 2 model with rim brakes, which sells for $880 (£625).
