The first UCI-sanctioned international race since Paris-Nice in March was cancelled after the first day.
The Dukola Mazovza, a four-stage race in the UCI 2.2 class in Poland, started Wednesday in Teresin, but was abruptly canceled at the end of the flat opening stage.
According to reports, the riders were ordered to stop with less than 30 km to go after a motorcycle rode onto the finish circuit and crashed with a race-organized car.
"The race appears to be over. A private motorcycle rode onto the circuit and crashed. No riders were involved, but the race has been cancelled," a message from the Israel Cycling Academy team account was posted on Twitter (opens in new tab).
The cancellation of all stages was quickly confirmed by race officials and the riders were returned to their team bases, all given the same time.
"The race is over. The accident occurred at one of the intersections on the circuit and the race cannot continue due to a police investigation," a message from the Israeli team's account read.
According to Polsat, a Polish news agency, the driver of the motorcycle overtook a vehicle parked on the other side of the road and crashed into a car of the race organization that was blocking the road for the rider.
The motorcycle driver was reportedly seriously injured and transported to the hospital by helicopter.
The Doukola-Mazovza was the first international UCI race to be held since the race calendar was closed in March due to a coronavirus outbreak. While several national championships have been held recently, this was the first international event. Some races, such as the HTV Cup in Vietnam and the GP Vermarc in Belgium, were held, but they were not official UCI events.
The Israel Cycling Academy was one of the 25 teams that stood on the starting line, along with the CCC Development Team.
Doukola Mazovza will continue (or restart) with a short individual time trial in Srzewiec on Thursday.
Polsat reports that a police investigation into the incident is underway and that the traditional road stages of the final two stages are in doubt.
