Mathieu Van Der Pol's Alpecin Phoenix withdraws from Sibiu Tour

Mathieu van der Pol will start his season at Strade Bianche on August 1, after the Alpecin Phoenix team decided to withdraw from the Sibiu Tour.

The move comes after the Dutch Foreign Ministry recommended that Romania be declared an "orange zone" and "limited to necessary travel." Travelers returning to the Netherlands from Romania are required to have a 14-day home quarantine.

As a result, the management and medical staff of Alpecin Phoenix have decided against participating in the race, which runs from July 23 to 26. Two World Tour teams, Bora Hasgrohe and Israel Startup Nation, still plan to participate.

"Together with the medical staff and the local organizing committee, we have closely monitored the situation," Alpecin Phoenix management said in a statement.

"Unfortunately, we have come to the conclusion that a move to Romania is not an option. The health of our players, staff, and public health comes first. We want to strictly follow all recommendations in order to eliminate all risks."

"We would like to thank the local organizing committee for their understanding and cooperation during the past weeks.

Van der Pol will return to racing and make his debut at Strade Bianche before competing in Milan-Torino, Milan-San Remo, Gran Piemonte, and Il Lombardia in August.

"It's an unfortunate decision, but understandable. I added the Sibiu Cycling Tour to my program to get into a racing rhythm before Strade Bianche."

"However, I was physically on schedule for the high altitude camp at La Plagne. That way I can start my program in Italy in a good mood. I'm looking forward to racing again."

Van der Pol plans to compete in the Tirreno-Adriatico in September and then in the "spring" classics such as La Flèche Wallonne, Liège-Bastogne-Liège, Amstel Gold Race, Tour of Flanders, and Paris-Roubaix [21] He is planning to participate in the "spring" races such as.
