Mondraker's Grommie is an electric balance mountain bike

Mondraker has done the unexpected and launched a series of electric balance mountain bikes. The Spanish brand, known as an early pioneer in progressive long-reach geometry, has added Glomy to its product portfolio.

By integrating battery assist into its balance bikes, the brand is challenging the conventional wisdom that e-MTBs are not throttle-assisted mopeds. With no pedals or cranks, this new grommie e-balance bike utilizes a hand-operated throttle.

Available in 12" and 16" wheel sizes, the Grommie is intended for riders ages 3 to 8. The Grommie is powered by a 250W brushless electric motor, which allows for moderate speeds.

There are three battery power modes to choose from: "Balance" (8.1 km/h), "Fun" (12.1 km/h), and "Advanced" (17.7 km/h).

Mondraker states that Gromy's battery-assisted ride endurance is 40-60 minutes, depending on rider weight and terrain gradient; the 80 Wh lithium-ion battery takes one hour to recharge; the battery can be charged in two hours.

In addition to the electric motor capabilities, the Grommie is built around a Mondraker-designed 6061-grade aluminum frame and fork. [The cockpit geometry is balanced by a 500 mm wide, 25 mm rise Mondraker handlebar. One might wonder how a very young rider would control the momentum of an e-Balance bike, but Mondraker has a Tektro MD-510 disc brake system on the rear wheel that operates a 140mm rotor.

The 12-inch wheel size Grommy weighs 7.5 kg, while its larger 16-inch wheel sibling weighs an additional 1 kg. Both bikes are equipped with 2.25" wide Vee Crown Gem tires.

The Mondraker Grommy has a target retail price of €749.
